The Member representing Isoko North Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly and aspirant for re-election in the 2027 general elections, Hon. (Barr.) Bernard Odior, has expressed concern over the gradual decline in the use of indigenous languages among young people, attributing the trend to excessive reliance on English in daily communication.

Hon. Odior made this known today, Monday, 20/04/26, while interacting with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ughelli Correspondents Chapel, led by its Chairman, Prince Dr. Mathias Ogbagah, at his country home in Ozoro.

To address the situation, the lawmaker disclosed that he is proposing legislation to make indigenous languages compulsory subjects in primary and secondary schools across Delta State, with academic progression tied to students’ proficiency in their native languages. He also advocated for the institutionalization of cultural festivals and competitions as a means of strengthening cultural identity and preserving heritage across generations.

Speaking further, the legal practitioner and seasoned grassroots politician traced his public service journey from his early days as a councillor in the 1990s to his various supervisory and advisory roles in local government, and currently as a member of the Delta State House of Assembly.

Highlighting his constituency interventions, Hon. Odior listed the renovation of primary schools in Aradhe, Ogwhe, Oyede and other communities as well as the provision of classroom furniture to improve the learning environment.

He also revealed that he has facilitated employment opportunities for youths, noting that about eight graduates are currently in structured employment, with plans underway to expand the number. According to him, informal scholarship support to students has exceeded ₦50 million, alongside healthcare interventions and skill acquisition programmes that have benefited about 50 youths.

On infrastructure, the lawmaker pointed to ongoing road rehabilitation projects in Ozoro and adjoining communities, describing them as strategic efforts aimed at improving accessibility and stimulating economic activities.

Reacting to reports linking the recent Ozoro festival to criminal or immoral activities, Hon. Odior dismissed such claims as misleading and unfounded, emphasizing the cultural significance of the event.

He also commended the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for ongoing infrastructural developments in Isoko North, particularly in road construction and improvements in the education sector. He noted that these projects have significantly enhanced connectivity between communities and boosted local economic activities.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the lawmaker to outline his legislative priorities and reaffirm his commitment to cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and infrastructural development in Isoko North Constituency.
